Your Loved One Deserves Expert Care–Let’s Talk

Home Health Care FAQs

As its name suggests, home health is professional home health care provided in the comfort of your own home. It includes skilled support from private nurses and home health aides to help with recovery and daily living. Your physician orders home health when it is the safest and most effective way to heal at home.

The main difference between home health care and personal home care assistance comes down to the level of skilled support needed. Home health care is ordered by a physician and includes professional services like private nurses and registered nurses to support recovery and medical needs.

Personal care assistance focuses on everyday support that helps with bathing, dressing, meal prep, transportation, and household tasks. These personal care services are usually provided by home health aides and often paid privately. Both are designed to help your loved one live safely and comfortably at home, but home health care provides the skilled, medically guided support that insurance can cover.

The cost of home health care depends on the level of support needed, the schedule, and the type of services provided. At Agatha Home Health, our private-pay rates typically range from $35–$40 per hour for non-medical home health aide services such as personal care, companionship, mobility support, and assistance with daily living.

In most cases, traditional health insurance and Medicare do not cover home health aides for ongoing, non-medical care.

Medicare coverage for home care is very limited and typically only applies when:

  • A physician has prescribed skilled services such as Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), or Speech Therapy
  • The care is approved by Medicare

Home health aide services are provided only as a short-term supplement to those skilled services

It’s important to note that this type of coverage is rare, temporary, and not intended for long-term personal care or companionship.

Medicare does not cover custodial or continuous home health aide services on their own.

While we are primarily a private-pay provider, Agatha Home Health proudly accepts several funding options, including:

  • Long-Term Care Insurance (LTC) policies
Most long-term care policies do cover home health aide services.
  • VA Benefits for eligible veterans and surviving spouses
  • Maryland Medicaid programs, including the Community First Choice (CFC) Program

Our team is experienced in helping families understand their benefits and
navigate eligibility whenever possible.

Absolutely! Our private care or live-in home health care aides provide help with these tasks:

  • Dressing
  • Bathing
  • Light meal preparation
  • Cleaning
  • Medication reminders
  • Assistance with select daily living activities

It is not always easy to identify if your loved one requires 24/7 home health care or the assistance of a home health care aide, but there are some common signs to watch for:

  • Struggling with daily tasks like cooking or cleaning
  • Noticeable weight loss or changes in appetite
  • Declining personal hygiene or difficulty with bathing and dressing
  • Increased loneliness or social withdrawal
  • Memory challenges or confusion

If you recognize any of these signs, connecting with a trained home health aide or exploring live-in home health care options can provide the support and peace of mind your family needs.

We do not provide transportation to medical appointments. However, we can supply a chaperone/escort for appointments and errands. We request that an insured vehicle be available for use or that a ride be pre-arranged for pickup.

Yes we do! We start by meeting with your family to complete a thorough assessment and create a personalized care plan. This helps us understand your loved one’s daily needs and preferences, as well as the kind of home health aide or private duty nursing services that are the best fit. Once the plan is complete, we carefully match your loved one with a caregiver who can provide the targeted support your loved one requires.

Yes! Get in touch with us to learn more about the VA Aid and Attendance program, which can help cover in-home senior care services. Note that benefits are NOT automatic and require an application.

But once approved, eligible veterans and their spouses may receive significant support–over $23,000 per year for veterans with spouses, or over $12,000 annually for surviving spouses– that goes toward personal home health care, assisted living, or private duty nursing care.
